Exide Technologies Environment, Health, and Safety Supervisor in Manchester, Iowa
This position will be responsible to review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and assist in the design of programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent injury caused by physical, chemical, or ergonomic factors. Duties will include, but not be limited to: Assess and evaluate plant conditions for Environmental and H&S compliance, conduct or manage inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing health and safety. The EHS Supervisor develops and maintains proficiency in technical matters related to Safety and Industrial Hygiene, including key duties in industrial hygiene air sampling studies, medical surveillance, plant housekeeping and noise monitoring.
Successful candidates will possess the ability to work with individuals from varied backgrounds, skills, and education levels to complete projects in an efficient and organized manner. This position reports to the location’s EHS Manager and will supervise EHS Technicians, Respirator Clerks and janitorial staff.
Programs and Documentation
Support EHS Manager and Plant Manager in driving proactive measures (leading indicators) such as GEMBA Walks, spot inspections of PPE and PPE use, ergonomic analysis and corrective action.
Collect and organize data for leading and lagging indicators.
Perform and oversee industrial hygiene monitoring, ensure quality data collection.
Ensure proper protocols in submission of samples for analysis.
Receive, approve and interpret industrial hygiene sampling results.
Assist in the review and update of the Air Sampling Plan.
Perform noise level studies and map plant areas as required.
Write industrial hygiene reports to organize and summarize data. Assist EHS Manager with statistical analysis of Health and Safety data for corporate review.
Conduct ergonomic assessments and implement corrective measures to reduce ergonomic injuries.
Work with supervision to develop and implement Job Safety Analysis for confined space entry and, where applicable, equipment-specific rescue plans.
Assist EHS Manager with incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning and execution.
Work within the company’s EHS Management System and EHS Standards.
Internal and External Compliance
Work closely with the facility Nurse to coordinate medical surveillance and related data.
Perform monthly housekeeping inspections and other focused EHS inspections.
Assist EHS Manager in the leading of the plant safety program and drive positive safety culture.
Inspect and maintain a log of all emergency response equipment and operational status.
Assist in the investigation of employee complaints related to health and safety.
Provide assistance to the engineering team for new manufacturing process, construction, demolition and renovation activities.
Maintain and work within department budget. Support plant financial objectives.
Oversee the EHS Technicians in the collection of daily emissions equipment performance data.
Train, evaluate and oversee the EHS Technicians in performing confined-space entry testing and monitoring of permitted entries to ensure safe and correct procedures are understood and employed.
Conduct new-hire employee safety orientation.
Conduct and complete mandated employee environment, health and safety training programs as required by the EHS Training Matrix, such as Hazard Communication, Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space Entry, RCRA, Storm Water, SPCC, and Personal Protective Equipment.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
A Bachelor degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Industrial Safety or related field.
Prefer 3-5 years industrial EHS experience including industrial hygiene.
Knowledge of proper protocol for exposure monitoring. Use of hygiene equipment and its calibration.
Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA/State Regulations.
LANGUAGE and COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Proficient with MS Office Products (Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook, and Word). Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to fumes, dust, airborne particles, and heat and humidity.
While some work will be performed in an office setting, the majority of the time the employee will be required to be in the manufacturing facility, where airborne exposures sometimes require the use of a respirator.
Employees are required to wear a respirator inside the manufacturing facility.
Qualified candidates must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, and climb with minimal effort.
