Exide Technologies Lead Buyer in Fort Smith, Arkansas

Overview

Responsible for the purchasing, production planning, and inventory control necessary to support continuous improvement in the manufacturing activities consistent with plant business goals like cost, quality, and quantity specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Distribute production schedules or work orders to departments.

  • Requisition and independently make decisions on maintaining inventories of materials or supplies necessary to meet production demands while meeting DOH goals

  • Arrange for delivery, assembly, or distribution of materials, supplies or parts to expedite and meet production schedules.

  • Supervise a team of buyers.

  • Confer with department supervisors or other personnel to assess progress and discuss needed changes.

  • Revise production schedules when required due to design changes, labor or material shortages, backlogs, or other interruptions, collaborating with management, marketing, sales, production, or engineering.

  • Confer with establishment personnel, vendors, or customers to coordinate production or shipping activities and to resolve complaints or eliminate delays.

  • Make independent decisions on expediting products to support on-time delivery.

  • Independently source low cost indirect products by using a 3-quote process.

  • Examine documents, materials, or products and monitor work processes to assess completeness, accuracy, and conformance to standards and specifications.

  • Record production data, including volume produced, consumption of raw materials, or quality control measures.

  • Works with Materials Manager to advance enterprise-wide sourcing programs as appropriate.

  • Calculate figures, such as required amounts of labor or materials, manufacturing costs, or wages, using pricing schedules, adding machines, calculators, or computers.

  • Coordinate activities of the buying, scheduling and distributing materials and supplies.

  • Comply with purchasing and contract management instructions, policies, and procedures.

  • Calculate the materials required to supply the plant using Material Requirements Planning (MRP).

  • Maintain records of goods ordered and received.

  • Support the resolution of vendor or contractor grievances, and claims against suppliers.

  • Regular attendance and timeliness is required in order to give sufficient support to the plant-wide team.

  • Must participate in process audits.

  • Other tasks may be required on an as needed basis.

  • While performing the duties of this job the individual is occasionally required to vary their schedules times and shifts

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability necessary to do this job.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS:

Required

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

  • Five years’ experience working in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field such as business or supply chain.

  • Two years of experience in the purchasing and scheduling field working with vendors, customers, management, marketing, sales, production, and engineering towards continuous improvement efforts and projects at the site level.

  • Experience working in a union manufacturing plant is a plus

  • A procurement and supply chain designation like APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) or Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) is a plus.

  • JDE Edwards or similar ERP experience.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

Required:

  • Working knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Word and Outlook.

  • Mathematical and analytical skills are needed.

  • Ability to communicate with multiple levels of vendors, customers, dealers, co-workers and management in order to achieve optimum plant performance

  • Good organization/administrative and time management skills.

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks in a fast paced environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of procurement and supply chain best practices and operating systems or management

  • Knowledge of Industrial Batteries and Chargers and/or Material Handling market a plus

  • Critical thinking and good troubleshooting technique.

  • High energy, self-motivated, ability to be successful without direct supervision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, individual is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.

  • Individual is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Ability to occasionally lift a minimum 50 lbs., regularly lift a minimum 25 lbs. on a daily basis and 51 to 150 lbs. with assistance of equipment on a daily to weekly basis.

  • Regular use of safety glasses and steel toed shoes.

  • Limited to regular use of respirator depending on department assignment.

  • Vision requirements; close vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job, individual is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles

  • Individual occasionally exposed to precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock.

  • Noise level is minimal to loud.

  • Regularly is working in a dirty lead contaminated area and must wear a uniform and safety shoes in that area to prevent the tracking and / or possible lead contamination of other clean areas or outside or the regulated areas.
